Education? in the USA

America is home to some of the most prestigious schools in the world, whether it be (there is a subjunctive mood in English, too!) elite prep schools in New England or Ivy-League Universities like Harvard and Yale, but recent research suggests that, generally speaking, educational standards are on the decline. Did you know that, whereas in 1995 the USA ranked first in the world in college graduation rate, in 2005 it was down to 15th? PBS, a non-profit public broadcasting television service, has created a series of programs called Where We Stand aimed at dissecting the American education system with all its glories and failures. The videos are available on their website and on Youtube. Here's a snippet of the show:

  1. First of all, why they subtitle the chinese teacher? I can understand him better than anyone else.

We live in a competitive world, get the first position is difficult, but hold that position is really hard, besides when we talk about education we cant avoid that the childhood get the values that we give to them trough the mass media, and it is in decadency.

Near us, we can see teenagers proud to know nothing, with references like Belen Esteban it isn´t very difficult to understand.

Moreover, I agree wit Geoffrey Canada(without underestimate other areas) when he says “the real global competition is the number of engineers and PhD you can produce.”

  2. Many teenagers in the US are wondering if it is worth to study a degree because they have to ask for loans that they have to pay back when they finish their studies. But with the current crisis they are not sure they will find a job when they finish their studies and they won't be able to pay back.
